Plot-House*
Luanda (Angola) 2010

(em actualização)

This project aims to design a house with an adaptable and modular constructive solution. The patio house is inspired in the vernacular architecture – the musseque - that can be found in several places in the territory of Luanda.

In this traditional architecture we acknowledged three important themes in its urban structures: 01. Adaptable urban structure that deals with different territorial or topographical conditions; 02. Chaotic and diversified public space; 03. Houses with variable dimensions and configurations according to each families needs.

The musseque original urban structure made by spontaneously growth in time is reinterpreted in our proposal adding to the scheme spatial references to achieve coherency and evolutionary tissue. With this proposition we can approach and clarify a ‘grid type urban plan’ and maintain a similar urban structure by introducing significant public space and key elements such as small infrastructure.

We propose a plot-house instead of a house inside a plot. We propose an adaptive and evolutionary house solution - a mimesis of the musseque house - a multi-pavilion house that defines one or several patios according to family size and needs. The define patios respond to the society needs including a vegetable garden, water patio (for the water collection and washing activities), gathering patio (eating-resting), and a public patio which in cases can be cede to the community or it can be used for family activities dependable of the community (selling the goods or having a small business).

All the enclosed spaces and exterior work and leisure activities are now mixed and absorbed within the nuclear house program. This permits an adaptable solution by size of elements and a modular condition achieving an evolutionary status for a forthcoming growing family. This quality has the ability to adapt from a house program into a small public use or a local store adding other components for the community.

The constructive system that we propose can be promoted by any possible sector: such as state, private or cooperative. All the pieces are prefabricated and can de self-assemble, in any kind of natural / topographical, condition. Simple load bearing prefabricated panel are assemble in a couple of weeks seeping the process for a society in a fast transformation. The panels made of OSB with an air chamber in between allow for continuous ventilation helping to dissipate heat. The construction system is totally dry, which means in can be assemble fast, without relying on water.
